How do the search engines workSearch engines are a pretty complicated system. The way you should look is a network of stops to get you there before you can provide the user with the correct information. There are billions of websites out there, and the job of a search engine is to choose which sites will be in the search engine (indexed) and when to display results based on the keywords the user has entered.
These are ‘bots’ that search engines use to scan through the global network for new websites and pages to add to their database. For spiders to do this successfully, it is essential that websites can be hands tracked. Sites with broken links, faulty URL structures, etc. can cause spiders to get lost and their pages not to end up in search engines.
What the spiders will moreover do is trammels the content of the page to see if it is good to appear in the search engine and plane for what type of keywords it will be shown.
To use the search engine, you enter a keyword in the search bar, and it will provide you with a list of results. How a search engine determines what it shows is a complex process. The first process is when he thinks about relevance. Search engines should crawl your site. G is a search engine that analyzes your page to see if it is suitable for display.
For example, let’s say you have content on your site that talks about a particular shell. If this is clear throughout the page, then the search engine will be able to crawl the page, see what it is about, and, firstly, decide whether it will index the page, and secondly, how high it will appear in the search results for jackets with a keyword. And any other related keywords.
Rules & Guidelines
All search engines have specific guidelines that they must follow on every website. As you know, certain things on the internet are illegal, etc. and that they should not be easily accessible by a search engine. Some people use specific spam techniques to try to trick the search engine into providing people with your website above others when it is not justified. It pays to read the guidelines of any search engine you want to rank a website for so you can better understand what they are looking for from you.
How do search engines work? So, a persistent question from everyone. No one knows precisely how the algorithm works or anything like that, but do you see people googling how search engines work? People watch using the three-step process. There are many different search engines, Google being the main one.
If you look at this, it will tell you the crawl, and the index, and the algorithm is how it all works. What I want to do is talk about some of those things and how things work. Your website must be built correctly in the first place. You must have a website that Google can crawl, index, and the bot can go in and out and verify what it is doing and crawl and index your pages.
So you have bots or Google bot if you want if you are asking the question of how Google works. Different search engines and even search engine optimization tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs. They all have bots that trickle websites and go through the pages, trickle all the content, the energies, and everything else in there.
That’s usually what Google does, and the bot tries to look at websites. The first part is web crawling. That’s one thing, so you hear people mention that the robot, the spider, or whatever, tracker, is the same.
What we have is a tool called the Google search console. It is advisable to install the Google search console first purely well, not merely because it does many different things. But you know, if you want to see how Google crawls your website, what it indexes, if there is a problem, then the search console can provide you with all that information.
So as I said, Google wants to crawl, and then what you need to do is index the pages within your website. Now crawling is one thing. Allowing Google to crawl your site is one thing. Getting the context indexed is another. A relatively common problem is people copying and pasting content.
Now, if you are reprinting and paste content from flipside website, or a provider’s list or whatever, and put it on your website, the chances of that page stuff indexed are slim, depending on how much you copied.
That’s where you can access your search console, and you can see how many pages are indexed.
You can also see how many pages are excluded. You know, and certain things within a website that you would like to exclude from the Google index, such as searching for photos and other specific things. So for eCommerce websites, you need to make sure those pages are not indexed, or the products maybe get the description, you know different product sizes.
So, for example, for these black shoes, you might want the black shoe page to be crawled and indexed. Still, you know it could, if the content is going to be the same in different other parts of that shoe, different Product versions will then be punished for copy content, so you may not want to index all kinds of product differences/different versions.
So if it’s black shoes and they come in a size six, seven, eight, nine, ten, then you might not necessarily want to index six, seven, eight, nine, ten. You know, having one of those indexed pages is more than enough. So obviously the customer can select the size they want. But in Google terms, you may want to filter out some of those product variations.

So you can see here, someone is taking content from the Amazon website for this 100. That’s what you shouldn’t do if you want to rank well.
So Google is smart. It can filter out duplicate content, and it throws it in the bin if you want to use layman’s terms. So that is how search engines work. They crawl, then index, obviously that algorithm and whatever else they’re looking for will be taken into play. And if you, first of all, get crawled and indexed, you’ve got a chance of ranking.
Whether that’s on page one or page ten, you’ve got a chance of ranking well. But obviously, they are gonna consider other things. It is very unlikely that you’ll rank well on content alone unless it’s a very, very niche market you’re working in or some non-competitive local area.
So that’s how search engines work in layman’s terms. The mechanics and everything else that goes in behind Google servers, you know, it’s a lot more complex. If you want to understand how all that works I’m sure there are core, seasoned people you can talk to such as Don Anderson and various other tech SEO’s who are completely obsessive about how these search engines work and do a lot of research on all that kind of stuff [inaudible 00:05:59] trying to get to the bottom of it.
So they’re super smart people and these guys are [inaudible 00:06:08] technical stuff. But that is how the search engines work in layman’s terms. So the crawling, the indexing, and then getting your website ranked is the key part. But Google search console is something you do want to install from the get-go.
You can have an overview of your website, performance. It does give you a whole heap of other stuff there as well, such as if you’ve got manual action taken against you. Mobile usability, if you’ve got Site maps, and various other things as well. So you can see my site map here, when Google last read it, all that kind of stuff.
There’s a whole heap of other stuff in here that you can have a look at, and what should allow you to get much more performance out of your website. And obviously, it will flag up certain errors and stuff as well, so you always want to make sure your website’s error-free, so make sure that you do have a look at that, and as I say, that is pretty much how the search engines work in layman’s terms.
